This latest overview of housing mobility programs in the U.S. is released amidst the biggest increase in support for housing mobility since the 1990s. The report also comes at a time when HUD is recommitting to the principle of “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing,” which means, in the Housing Choice Voucher program, giving families a meaningful choice to live in lower poverty neighborhoods with high performing schools and other indicia of “opportunity.” In this context, housing mobility is not only good policy, it is also a civil right held by families with vouchers, a right to move to a community of their choice.
