Come out and support “diversity” on February 28: When the National Coalition on School Diversity chose its name in 2009, some of us thought that the word “diversity” was too weak – that we should be explicit about school integration, or even desegregation – but Diversity was the word that the five members of the Supreme Court had just blessed in the Parents Involved case as an important government interest justifying a variety of race-conscious methods to achieve it. And now we are at the start of a deeply reactionary, lawless regime that is trying to erase and rewrite our history, distort and censor our language, and pervert our civil rights principles to undo the gains that we have made toward a more inclusive society. In this new world, “diversity” doesn’t seem like such a weak word anymore – indeed it feels like something we should be standing up and fighting for, even more than before. And it is one of the tools we need to restore our democracy.
So here is at least one small thing you can do now: Come and join us for the 5th National Conference on School Diversity, February 27-28 in Washington, DC (and bring it back to your community). Details here – and register here!
