“50 years of tenant-based rental assistance”: We were pleased to be a part of this special issue of HUD’s social science journal Cityscape, which takes an in-depth look at multiple aspects of the Housing Choice Voucher program, HUD’s largest housing program. We especially recommend our entry, “Section 8 in the Courts: How Civil Rights Litigation Helped to Shape the Housing Choice Voucher Program,” and there are also important articles on changes in voucher location patterns, portability, project-based vouchers, source of income discrimination, direct rental assistance, and much more! You can read and download all the articles here.
Empowering voucher tenants: We’re also excited to be supporting UnlockNYC and their innovative tenant-powered discrimination reporting tool, as they expand upstate in partnership with the fair housing group HOME in Buffalo (which also runs a housing mobility program in Erie County funded by NY Homes and Community Renewal via Enterprise Community Partners).

Inequality and health: Fifteen years ago, The Spirit Level was published in England, bringing a powerful public health perspective to the problem of inequality (PRRAC published a summary in 2010). This week, the authors published an updated analysis in The Spirit Level at 15, accompanied by an op-ed in the Guardian. Suffice to say, inequality is worsening, on both sides of the Atlantic, and courageous policy leadership will be needed soon.
